WEEK 7: I FINALLY GET TO PREACH FOR REAL NOW!

November 20, 2017

Letter #1

This past week has been kind of crazy, but also super awesome! My mission president and his wife are really nice and Queretaro is super clean compared to Mexico City. I was really nervous on my first day to find out where I was going and who my companion was. I ended up going to San Miguel de Allende and got there kind of late at night. My companion is Elder Monroy and he is super awesome! He is from the state of Hidalgo and he speaks English. However he makes me speak Spanish and he will only speak English to me if its really important or if I don't know a word. He is really patient with me learning the language and I couldn't have asked for a better companion. He has lots of ideas for how we work in this area and I am really excited. We live with the other elders in our district, Elder Bush and Elder Malderva. We also have sister missionaries in our district who live in Dolores Hidalgo which I visited last week for a district meeting. Its a smaller town and is also really beautiful. One kind of fun story about my apartment is that my second day in the field, there was a scorpion on the bathroom floor while I was using the bathroom. That was kind of freaky! We killed it and apparently that is not very common here.

As far as learning Spanish, listening is definitely my weakness. They talk fast and with accents that can be difficult to understand. I can understand a lot more now, but I have a long way to go. People can understand what I am saying in the streets even with my american accent, but my companion and I are helping each other with pronunciation in English and Spanish.

We are opening this area and there haven't been young missionaries here for several years. We have been working hard contacting old investigators and in the streets to find people to teach. We have also been working very closely with the members here who are very supportive. There are two wards in the city of San Miguel, and my area is called Aldea after the Aldea ward. Our ward has about 300 members, but only 50 went to church this week. We have lots of work to do with reactivation and finding new people! We eat lunch with a member almost everyday. The food here is amazing!!!! Contacting in the streets is still difficult for me, but I'm getting a lot more comfortable with it and my companion makes sure I am doing it a lot to learn. Sometimes we meet some pretty crazy people which can be interesting. Last night we met an Italian who started talking to us about other dimensions and reptile people and weird stuff like that. Speaking of foreigners, there are a lot of tourists here and many Americans actually live here. Most of them hang out in the center of town, but some live in the neighborhoods. It´s kind of weird now to hear English in the streets every now and then.

San Miguel is very pretty, especially overlooking the city or in the center of town. Of course there are always neighborhoods that are not so pretty, but that's okay. All of the streets are cobblestone which is cool to see, but is not so fun to walk on all day. For the most part the city is really safe, it is only at nigh time that we have restrictions on where we can be as missionaries. The people here are nice and it amazed me how many people believe in Jesus and accept our invitations to meet with them. My first night contacting all but one person gave us their address to visit them. Clearly the Lord has prepared people here for us to teach. A spiritual moment this week was yesterday when my companion and I were looking for a less active member, we ended up finding his family instead. They are all less active now and hardly remember the Gospel and the fourth generation has never been exposed to it. They let us in and we taught a lesson about the Book of Mormon. They want us to come back later to teach them this Saturday!

I love it here and I love being able to share the restored Gospel of Jesus Christ with the people here. My heart is full and I am so glad that I have the authority to teach other people and invite them to come unto Christ. Missionary life can have its spiritual highs and emotional lows, but it definitely is unlike anything I have every experienced before. The transition from the MTC was interesting, since there are less rules here. However, it is actually kind of nice to choose my own schedule and be able to spend time outside instead of in a classroom all day.

Time flies on the mission, but every day has something new and there is always more work to be done. I know that this church is the only living church headed by Jesus Christ himself and it brings me great joy to know that I have the opportunity to be his representative to the people of San Miguel right now.

I love you all and I hope you are all doing well!

P.S. My companion baptized a girl named Dennise last week. She is actually a member and was baptized when she was 8, but somehow her records got lost and they had to do it again. I didn't know this until after the service since I don't understand what is going on most of the time since everyone is speaking in Spanish.

P.P.S. Sorry for the lack of apostrophes, I still don't know how to type them on a Spanish keyboard.

Letter #2 (To Mom answering some of my questions)

My P Day is on Mondays. My companion speaks sufficient English, but certainly more than I speak Spanish. He is really awesome and very patient with my lack of ability to communicate effectively. We live in a safer area of town that's somewhat close to the center. The most difficult part for me right now is understanding what people are saying. Its really safe here and very pretty. I have not had any intestinal issues or had any problems with the food. In fact, the food here is really not as spicy as everyone makes it sound. The members make really good food and we eat lunch with them almost every day. I do have to make my own dinner and breakfast, but lunch is the biggest meal of the day here. I am so excited to get working here and I already love being a real missionary! I love you sooo much!!

WEEK 6: Letter from the Mission President's Wife

Nov 11, 2017

Dear Waite family,

We are so thrilled to have Elder Waite in the mission field with us. What an excellent young man he is. Along with 17 others, Elder Waite arrived safely in Querétaro yesterday. After interviews and lunch and orientation, etc., Elder Waite has been assigned to serve in San Miguel de Allende. He will be serving with Elder Monroy, a wonderful elder from Mexico. They will be 'whitewashing' the area as the couple who has been serving there completed their mission last week.
San Miguel is a beautiful, old city. There are lots of Americans who visit and also who have retired there. The church is small but our Area Seventy lives there and is anxious to help it grow so that's something, right? I think he will love it.
Again, we are so grateful to receive such a prepared and wonderful missionary as Elder Waite. Thank you for your love and support of him.

You are welcome to contact me through email or through messenger if you ever have questions or concerns. If you ever want to send packages, I recommend either the mail, or fed ex or a lady called LDXpress. She advertises on our Facebook page and the stuff she brings gets here safely and quickly....so far. Also, I periodically have visitors (my girls are coming in February) and are always willing to carry a small package for you. Let me know.
Our mission Facebook page is 2016 Mexico Queretaro mission. There might be another one by the same name. Ours you have to request to be a member. I post pictures (and we get some from other families from their missionaries) and it's a way to communicate with other families as well.

WEEK 6: Made it to the Mission Home

November 13, 2017

Tom's 5 hour bus ride from the MTC to his mission.  He finally made it.  Read the update below....
"Hey everyone! I'm typing this from the mission office in Queretaro! It is super beautiful here and it seems a lot wealthier and safer than Mexico City. I have been assigned to serve in San Miguel de Allende in the Celaya Zone. I will be traveling there alone tonight and I'll meet my companion, Elder Monroy, when I get there. I just wanted to say that I love you all and that I am so glad that I came on my mission. This has been a crazy long day, but is also very exciting to head out to the field. I love you!"

WEEK 5: LAST WEEK!!!!!!!!!!!

am so excited to head out to the field next week. I have a desire to share this Gospel with those in my mission and I can't wait to get there. This past week the second counselor in the General Relief Society came here and spoke to us. It was pretty cool and my favorite thing she said was that we don't need to be perfect, we just need to have a perfect effort. I also got to hear from President Nelson on Tuesday and his talk was amazing! He said that we can all be living Epistles in the way we act and through sharing our testimonies with others. I really felt the Spirit and I know that he is a true apostle of the Lord.

I feel like all the weeks here have blended together in my mind and everything goes by so quickly. My time in the CCM has been a time of testing my patience with my companion and also of great spiritual learning. I will miss the opportunity to have this much time to study the scriptures and to hear the words of the apostles directed at me in this time and place.

A lesson that I have learned this week is the importance of strict obedience. I had some opportunities to stand up for what is right this week. I didn't think these would be a problem among other missionaries, but ultimately we are all still 18 year olds. My entire district and my companion wanted to skip study time in the morning and play soccer. However, I told them they had agency and if they did play soccer, I would be studying on the benches. This caused the entire district to change their minds and we ended up not going. Although my companion slept in for an hour instead (which wasn't a whole lot more productive). He set a new record this week of sleeping in 2 hours Sunday morning. Sometimes he can be difficult to deal with. However I learned a lot from that study time and I am so glad that I decided to be obedient.

I know that the Lord can work miracles in our lives if we are willing to have faith and be obedient. I can't wait for the field and I love you all!

Week 4: Miracles are real and this is the Gospel of Happiness

November 1, 2017

I feel like time has flied by these past few weeks and I am very excited to go into the field in only a week and a half. I had a cold for a few days, but I asked my district leader to give me a priesthood blessing and the next day I was already feeling better. I feel perfectly healthy now, so I know that priesthood blessings really do work and that the Lord does care about all of us even when we only have something as simple as a cold. I really enjoy being here at the CCM, because the Spirit is so strong especially when we practice teaching. It's amazing to watch the Spirit guide the lesson and have us simply deliver the message. A scripture I found this week was Doctrine and Covenants 31:3-4. I love the energy and happiness about sharing the Gospel in this scripture. This truly is a Gospel of happiness and joy. I can't wait to go and share it with others in Querétaro.

Something funny is Elder Bolman from my district and I have been using an inside joke non-stop. We keep saying "Mire su espalda" which means watch your back. The whole district and a lot of our CCM generation knows about it and its pretty funny.

Thank you so much for the Halloween package! It was lots of fun to get some candy and it really put a smile on my face. I feel like I don't have a whole lot of new stuff to share, so this is it!

Have a good week and remember I love you!

(Here is a picture of what I had for lunch today ...Just for fun I guess).

Also me with my package.

WEEK 3: ALMOST A MONTH!!

October 25, 2017

I can't believe that I've almost been in the CCM for a whole month. It's awesome here, but I really would rather be in the field right now. However, I know that the Lord needs me to prepare more, and so I'm working hard at being a better teacher (yeah I know you're all laughing). I love Ether 12:27,  because despite my weakness in speech and teaching, Christ can strengthen me and magnify my efforts to speak the language and teach the Gospel. This week I have been focusing on developing more charity and love for others. Moroni 7:44-47 teach about how charity suffereth long. I know that charity is more than one act of service, it is the pure love of Christ that inspires to serve others continually. It's not easy to love everyone all the time, but I know that it is a great way to be happy and closer to the Lord.

This week the missionaries who arrived with us, but were on the three week track left. I know they will do awesome and many of them were great sources of inspiration for me. I attached some pictures of some of the missionaries that I met.

Not a whole lot has happened since Friday, but last night we did hear from an apostle. We watched a broadcast from the Provo MTC of Elder Stevenson. He talked about the blessing of Preach My Gospel and how we are now able to teach according to the needs of the investigators and by the Spirit. He also shared good insight on how the missionary handbook is really a book of blessings, because obedience truly does bring blessings. I have noticed that by being obedient, I have not had as many problems with homesickness as the other missionaries. I truly have been blessed.

I love reading all of your emails and I love you all!

Yo amo el Evangelio de Jesucristo y yo sé que el Señor es en la cabeza de la iglesia hoy. El Libro de Mormón es la palabra de Dios y yo sé que felicidad venga por medio de la obediencia a los mandamientos.

I love the Gospel of Jesus Christ and I know that the Lord is at the head of the church today. The Book of Mormon is the word of God and I know that happiness comes through obedience to the commandments.

Hasta luego!

P.S. I attached a picture of my district at the temple this morning.

WEEK 2: Habeñeros, TRC, Room Inspection: Oh My!

October 20,2017

This past week and a half has gone by very fast. I feel a lot more comfortable here and my Spanish is coming along now. There are some times when it's more difficult to speak, but there are special times when the gift of tongues is very powerful. It truly is a great opportunity and a blessing to learn Spanish from native speakers 24/7. I love learning Spanish!!!! My favorite discoveries since my last email are Bueno Bars and Manzanita Sol. Bueno Bars are made by Kinder (Like Kinder Eggs) and are basically a hazelnut kit-kat. They are worth their weight in gold among the missionaries! Manzanita Sol is a Mexican apple soda that is amazing! I've attached some pictures with the email. On the note of food, my companion decided to eat an entire Habenero whole last week. His entire face went dark red and I thought he was completely nuts!

My district has been bonding really well, and I feel like I'm good friends with everyone here. Elder Wheelwright and I have been spending gym time on the track running. I feel like I'm staying in shape, but I eat a lot more food here than I ever did at home. I have probably gained some weight, but I don't know how much.

And now for a random story from this week. I was walking into class one day after going to the bathroom, when Elder Raven from my district is pretending to drink my Manzanita Sol. He told me he didn't drink it so I just kept drinking it. Then a few minutes later, I find out that Elder Raven apparently has cold sores and he just starts smiling. I totally thought I was going to get his cold sores! I was pretty mad and he wouldn't tell me if he had really drank it or not, until the morning. In the morning I found out from him and some other elders that he really didn't drink it, but for a little bit I actually thought I was going to have cold sores for the rest of my life! I know this is a pretty weird story.

Last week we had our first room inspection, which we failed. I was not very happy about that, especially since my bed and closet and received perfect approval, which my companion didn't make his bed or lock anything up. It's okay thought, our room is a lot cleaner now, and it shouldn't be a problem in the future.

On Sunday, we watched an amazing recording of a past MTC devotional from Elder Bednar. It was about the character of Christ and I loved hearing the apostle's profound insights on the scriptures. Elder Bednar shared that continual conversion and an understanding of Christ's character is essential to ensure that we never fall away from the church. Christ was always concerned about others, and He lost himself in His work. The more we can be selfless, the happier we will be and the more Christlike we will become.

For my mission plaque, I would like my scripture to be Words of Mormon verse 7. I truly love the idea of faith in Jesus Christ and Heavenly Father, because I don't know everything and will never learn everything in this life. However, through the Spirit I can be an instrument in the hands of the Lord. I love this scripture and I'm working on applying it to my new life as a missionary.

Yesterday, I taught my first real lesson to people from outside the CCM. My first lesson was with a member named Pablo from here in Mexico City. He spoke very fast and didn't speak English, but the Spirit helped me teach from the heart in the Spanish language. This and Sunday were perhaps my favorite times this week.

I love you all and you are in my prayers! It was fun to read what you guys are up to and see some pictures. I know that the Lord loves you all and always remember that.

I know that Jesus Christ is our Savior. I know that the gift of tongues is very real. I believe that God can guide our lives through the Holy Ghost. I believe that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God and translated the Book of Mormon.

Love Elder Waite

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED: WEEK 1

October 11, 2017

Buenos días de Mexico City!

Well, this week has been pretty overwhelming. My first day was crazy and really rushed. The drive from the airport to the CCM (Centro Capacitacion Misional = MTC in Spanish) was pretty exciting. If there are traffic laws in Mexico, nobody follows them! Once we arrived, we were busy nonstop and given little time to email home, so sorry about the briefness of my first email. The first night we had a great devotional from President Eves about being diligent missionaries.

My companion is Elder Wheelwright from Blackfoot, Idaho. He is pretty cool and wants to be a lawyer, so that's kind of cool. It has been a little difficult for me to get used to being with someone else 24-7. Things are getting better, and he wants to do what's right. I am very blessed to have a companion who wants to be obedient.

Here in the CCM the official language is Spanglish. The Latinos are trying to learn English while they are here and the Americans are trying to learn Spanish, so Spanglish is a good compromise and seems to be the most effective. The gift of tongues is real, I'm surprised how much I've learned in only one week. I've already taught 4 "lessons" in Spanish and I can actually understand about 50% of what the Latino elders say.

All the other missionaries told me that week 1 is the most difficult. I hope so, because it was pretty rough adjusting to CCM life and being away from home. Every day has very spiritual times and very difficult times. It doesn't help that most missionaries just pretend like they have no problems. I was a little surprised at how many Elders don't seem to know why they are here. There are a lot who could care less about learning the Gospel or obeying mission rules. Sunday was my favorite day, because I felt the Spirit and didn't have to worry about a crazy schedule. My schedule from now on is a lot better and I'm feeling more comfortable every day.

The weather here is awesome! It rains every now and then, but the temperature is warm and comfortable. We eat our meals in El Comedor. There isn't a ton of variety, but the food is okay. It's about half American and half Mexican. However, the fruit drinks are great! My favorite is the apple soda. We spend most of our time in the classroom with our teacher Hermana Rodriguez. There we practice Spanish and learn more about the Gospel. She taught us how to pray in Spanish on Day 1 and I've been saying most of my public prayers and companionship prayers in Spanish ever since.

My district is awesome! One of the elders went home yesterday, but I know he made the right decision and I can't wait until he comes to Queretaro next year. I know I probably forget to include a lot of info, but I went to the temple today, so I don't have a ton of time. I loved reading all your emails, I'm sorry that I can't respond to all of them. I pray for you and I love you!

Elder Waite

MADE IT TO THE MEXICO MTC!

October 3, 2017

I only have a few minutes, but I arrived safely. My first p day is next Wednesday and that is when I can send my next email. Mexico is awesome! I love it here and the city is so colorful and all the missionaries are really nice and helpful. I will write more next time. I love you all.

WEEK 10: ALMOST CHRISTMAS!

December 18, 2017 Last Tuesday was a little crazy here with the day of the virgin. There were fireworks almost the entire day. On Friday  ...
